Crack Seal Frequently Asked Questions
-
Creak sealing is when hot tar is used to fill cracks in roads.
-
Temperature changes and oxidation from various weather elements deteriorate asphalt pavement over time which can be a leading cause for cracks in surfaces to develop. Untreated cracks allow water and debris to penetrate the pavement surface which could result in the asphalt base deteriorating at an increased rate. If cracks are left untreated they will continue to expand and eventually turn into pot holes and damage the base of the road which ultimately causes major road failure.
-
It simple seals the cracks so water and debris cannot enter the area and further damage the pavement or its base.
-
Once applied over the cracks there will be black stripes where is was applied.
-
The product adheres and dries almost immediately. After applied a product called detack is sprayed over the tar so is does not stick to a vehicle’s tires. The lane that the product is being applied will be slower since vehicles will need to safely pass the crack seal crew, but the lane will not be shut down.
-
No, this product does not leave the surface of the road so there is no concern of it having any negative effective on one’s health.
Rejuvenating Seal Frequently Asked Questions
-
BIORESTOR is a rejuvenator used to increase and extend a pavement’s life cycle.
-
Asphalt pavements are flexible pavements, which are constructed of thin layers of asphalt binder (the glue that holds the mixture together) over stone bases or other asphalt layers. These layers are intended to flex to accommodate the weight of vehicles and provide an undamaged surface for driving. Over time these layers become brittle and inflexible causing them to crack. BIORESTOR penetrates the asphalt surface by introducing agriculture oils that soften the asphalt binder which renews flexibility.
-
“The oxidation aging in pavements begins at the time of construction and continues throughout a pavement’s life. However, most aging occurs within the first 2-4 years of service life.” (Foundation for Pavement Preservation). Most things require preventative maintenance (air conditioner, vehicles, equipment, etc.) and pavements are no different. Pavement preservation efforts are used to ensure the service life of a road is maximized to the fullest extent possible. The longer asphalt binder remains flexible the less oxidation and cracking will occur. Once a pavement begins to crack and oxidize it starts to deteriorate at an increased rate.
-
BIORESTOR is milky looking in color but dries clear. After it is applied it will darken the color of the road for a short period of time, but eventually return to its original color. BIORESTOR can be applied over road striping with no effects.
-
The product takes approx. 45 minutes to dry. On hot summer days it could take only 30 minutes to dry and on cooler days it could take up to an hour. Only one traffic lane is closed at a time to allow for traffic to continue flowing.
-
No. BIORESTOR is a Biobased product which is defined by the USDA as products that are composed in whole or in large part of agricultural or forestry materials. BIORESTOR is Carcinogen-Free!
Texture Seal Frequently Asked Questions
-
Onyx NA is a mixture of asphalt emulsion with increased levels of angular fine aggregates, polymers, and catalysts.
-
Most things require preventative maintenance (air conditioner, vehicles, equipment, etc.) and pavements are no different. Pavement preservation efforts are used to ensure the service life of a road is maximized to the fullest extent possible. Weather and wear cause a road’s surface to oxidize and deteriorate causing the asphalt binder (the glue that holds the mixture together) to become brittle and breakdown. When this occurs, the fine aggregate starts to leave a road’s surface and the larger aggregate become exposed. Over time these larger aggregates start to leave the surface and the road physically starts to fall apart.
-
Onyx NA fills minor surface voids by replacing the fine aggregate that have been lost due to aging and oxidation. The asphalt emulsion carries the aggregate into the voids while the polymers create a protective coating to seal everything on the road.
-
After the application of Onyx NA your pavement will have a rich black color and like a new road. Though this is a secondary effect of the product, it does have an aesthetically pleasing look once complete. Over time the Onyx material will wear off the top of the aggregate, which is normal. The benefit of this treatment is its ability to surround all sides of the aggregate and create a stronger bond, so it does not leave the road.
-
Depending on which application method (scrub broom or spray) is used a single traffic lane can be closed anywhere between 30-60 minutes. On hot summer days it could take as little as 30 minutes to dry and on cooler days it could take up to an hour. Only one traffic lane is closed at a time to allow for traffic to continue flowing. MRI will coordinate with HOAs so residents are aware when work will be performed so every effort can be made to reduce any inconveniences this process may occur. Access to driveways will be limited during this time for the houses that are on the closed lane. Exceptions can be made for emergencies but entering and exiting driveways prior to the product drying will create black track marks in driveways from vehicle tires and extend closure times as the product will need to be reapplied. Road work is typically conducted between 8:00am and 5:00pm (excluding set up and clean up).
